Designing for Kids: Reflections on Paediatric Imaging & What We're Learning

[Jun 04, 2025]

The May 2025 issue of RadiologyToday featured a piece that really resonated with us: Pediatric Imaging: No Small Consideration.

It’s a timely reminder that imaging children isn’t just about using smaller doses of radiation—it’s about rethinking the entire experience.

Children aren’t just smaller versions of adults. They’re different in how they move, how they communicate, and how they respond to unfamiliar environments.

The article highlights how:

🟠 Clinicians are adapting imaging protocols to be more patient-friendly
🟠 Using tools like ultrasound and MRI to reduce radiation exposure
🟠 Applying clinical decision rules to avoid unnecessary scans altogether

At Adept, we’re not radiologists - but we are designers and engineers who work closely with them. And we’ve been asking ourselves the same questions:

How do we support kids better during procedures? How do we design tools that are simple, ergonomic, and actually fit the patients they’re meant for?

We’ve spent time with the people doing this work—watching, listening, and learning. We’ve prototyped, tested, and refined. And we’re still learning.

One of the things that’s come out of that thinking is our Overhead Arm Support Small.

It’s not a headline product. It’s just a quiet, thoughtful response to a real need: a support that fits smaller patients better, without adding complexity for the clinician. Because when it comes to kids, the little things matter most.
