How to use STARBoard

Complete guide to assembling, positioning, and using the STARBoard for optimal patient positioning during interventional procedures.

How to assemble the STARBoard

The STARBoard comes pre-assembled. Check that the soft arm support pad is correctly positioned before use.

Which parts of the STARBoard are adjustable

The shoulder joint screw can be adjusted to allow free arm movement or to hold the arm in a fixed position. The wrist pivot screw on the armrest controls wrist extension for distal or proximal access. The wrist pivot screw on the handle controls hand rotation and can be tightened to hold the hand in place. The armrest automatically adjusts to the patient’s arm length once positioned. Adjustments are easier to make before the device is draped.

How to remove the armrest from the slider arm

To remove the armrest from the slider arm, press down on the plastic slider tab to disengage, then slide the armrest off.

How to set up the STARBoard and position the daggerboard correctly

Correct daggerboard placement is essential for STARSystem function and patient setup. It slides between the mattress and imaging table, with the patient’s weight holding it in place. Slide to position the daggerboard between the shoulder and elbow. Adjust depending on patient height. Make sure the daggerboard is pushed in until the shoulder joint sits close to the mattress to ensure stability.

Tips
Daggerboard placement for shorter patients: place closer to the shoulder.
Daggerboard placement for Taller patients: place closer to the elbow.

How to drape the arm support pad

(optional recommendation to protect against contamination and strain)

The soft foam arm pad can stain if exposed to blood. Before placing the patient’s arm, we recommend covering the pad with a drape to reduce blood contamination. Pads can be reused after disinfection if there is no visible damage.

If staining remains a concern, contact us to purchase a replacement.

Correct patient arm placement

Ensure the patient grips the handle firmly. This allows the slider to adjust to the patient’s arm length and helps position the wrist and forearm correctly in the armrest.

How to secure the patient’s arm with tape

(optional recommendation)

If the patient is restless, tape can be used for additional support. It can be applied around the forearm and/or across the knuckles to help keep the arm or hand in position.

How to set the shoulder joint screw for movement or stability

Turn the thumbscrew to adjust the tension on the shoulder joint screw. It should allow the armrest and daggerboard to move freely while staying firm enough to hold the arm in position. Once set, this can remain unchanged for future use.

How to set the wrist pivot screw for wrist extension during distal or proximal radial access

The wrist pivot screw controls tension to set the wrist angle for distal or proximal radial access. Adjust to allow smooth movement while maintaining enough resistance to hold the wrist in place. For proximal access, the wrist may be gently hyperextended with the hand supinated while holding the handle. For distal access, position the wrist in a relaxed pistol grip with slight ulnar flexion if needed.
After access, return the wrist to a neutral position to rest at the patient’s side.

Tips
Adjust as much as possible before draping and know where the screws are located.

How to store the STARBoard?

Release the shoulder joint screw on the underside of the STARBoard. Slide the Arm Rest close to the shoulder pivot. Fold the daggerboard so the arrow tip is facing the opposite direction. This forms a compact unit for storage.
