15 Years of STARSystem: From a Clinical Question to a Global Journey

For 15 years, STARSystem has evolved alongside interventional care. Its story began with a clinical question and the belief that thoughtful design could make a meaningful difference for clinicians and their patients.

There's a story to everything

Every innovation starts with an enquiry.

When Dr Mark Webster approached Adept Medical, he wasn't looking to create another product. He saw an opportunity to make radial access easier for clinicians and more comfortable for patients.

That question brought together clinical insight with New Zealand design, engineering and manufacturing expertise.

The result was the STARBoard.

Designed in response to a real clinical challenge, STARBoard provided the foundation for what would become the STARSystem. Over the years, the system has continued to evolve alongside advances in interventional care, while remaining true to its original purpose: creating practical solutions that support clinicians and the patients they care for.

Every great idea starts somewhere. This was ours.

But an idea is only the beginning. What allows it to grow are the people who believe in it, challenge it and help make it better.

Great ideas grow through relationships.

A product doesn't evolve on its own.

Behind the STARSystem are the people who have helped shape it. Clinicians, engineers, designers, production teams, distributors and partners have all played a part in its journey.

Clinicians asked questions, shared their experiences and challenged us to keep improving. Our engineering and production teams translated those insights into practical design solutions, testing and refining each generation along the way.

Looking back at early STARBoard prototypes is a reminder that innovation is a process. Every version taught us something. Every refinement helped make the next one better.

Many of the people involved in those early days remain part of the STARSystem journey today. Their experience, knowledge and commitment continue to influence every system that leaves our facility in New Zealand.

The best ideas are built together.

And when people work together over time, they build more than a product. They build knowledge.

Knowledge built over time.

A great idea is only the beginning.

Turning that idea into a medical device and continuing to manufacture and refine it over many years takes experience, precision and attention to detail.

Every STARSystem is designed and manufactured in New Zealand. From engineering and tooling through to machining, assembly and quality control, each stage contributes to the finished product.

Over 15 years, that process has created something less visible but equally valuable: knowledge.

It is the knowledge gained from designing and testing new ideas. From conversations with clinicians. From manufacturing thousands of components. From learning what works and finding opportunities to make it better.

That accumulated experience continues to shape the STARSystem today.

Because innovation isn't only about having the first idea. It's also about the care, knowledge and craftsmanship that go into making that idea work, again and again.

Ultimately, all of that knowledge, collaboration and experience comes back to the reason STARSystem was created in the first place. People.

Care for people.

Through every stage of the STARSystem journey, one purpose has remained constant: supporting clinicians so they can focus on what matters most, caring for their patients.

Technology has advanced. Clinical practice has evolved. The STARSystem has evolved with it.

But its development continues to be guided by the same combination of clinical insight, practical design and collaboration that shaped the original STARBoard 15 years ago.

Today, the STARSystem story extends well beyond our facility in New Zealand. It includes the clinicians who use it, the distributors and partners who represent it, and the many people who have contributed ideas, feedback and expertise along the way.

Fifteen years later, we are still asking questions, still listening and still looking for better ways to support the people working at the forefront of interventional care.

This anniversary is an opportunity to look back at how far STARSystem has come, but it is also an opportunity to look forward.

The next chapter is still being written.
